Originally part of the Greek community from 1906 to 1909, Delta Chi left the WashU campus due to an organizational shift from a law fraternity to a social fraternity. In the Spring semester of 2020, the fraternity was recolonized with no physical location on or off campus with the goal of expanding the social fraternity community.
According to our Constitution’s Preamble, Delta Chi is founded upon the idea that close association through brotherhood may promote friendship, develop character, advance justice, and assist in the acquisition of a sound education. It has been pointed out, however, that the four most important words in the Preamble are not what most members assume: “Friendship”, “Character”, “Justice”, and “Education”. Instead, it is suggested that the four most important words are “Promote,” ”Develop,” “Advance,” and “Assist.” The point is that “Fraternity” and, in particular, “Delta Chi” is not just about what “is” but what we, as members, should actually be doing. It is our actions that make Delta Chi, which is why the key words are the verbs instead of the nouns.
